Dining Table Size Guide: How Many Seats Fit in an Irish Dining Room

The most common dining table mistake in Irish homes is buying for the number of chairs you want rather than the room you have. This guide gives the working rules: how much table each person needs, how much clearance the room needs around it, and which table lengths seat four, six, eight or ten. Sizes quoted for our own tables are the real measurements from the product pages.

The two numbers that decide it

  • 60cm of table edge per person. That is the width of a place setting with elbow room. Chairs with arms need 65 to 70cm.
  • 90cm of clear floor around the table. That lets someone push a chair back and stand, and lets another person walk behind them. On a wall side where nobody sits, 60cm is enough.

So a table that is 220cm long and 104cm wide needs a space of roughly 400cm by 284cm to work comfortably. Measure the room first, subtract 180cm from each dimension, and that is the largest table that fits well.

Every table in the range is between 76cm and 80cm high, which is the standard that suits dining chairs with a 45 to 48cm seat. For rooms under 3.5m on the short side, the small kitchen tables are sized for four.

Rectangular, round or oval?

  • Rectangular seats the most people per square metre and sits against a wall when needed. The default for six or more.
  • Round suits square rooms and four people; everyone can talk to everyone. Above 140cm diameter the middle becomes hard to reach.
  • Oval gives the seating of a rectangle with softer corners for a room with a walkway past the table. A pedestal base, as on the Como and Senato tables, frees up leg room at the ends.

Buying the table and chairs together

A dining set takes the guesswork out of chair height and width, because the chairs were designed for that table. If you are mixing, keep 28 to 32cm between the chair seat and the underside of the table top, and check the chair width against the 60cm-per-person rule above. Our dining chairs list seat width and height on every product page.

Dining table size questions

What size table for a 4m by 3m dining room?

Subtract 180cm from each side: 220cm by 120cm is the largest footprint that keeps 90cm clear all round, so a 200 to 220cm table seating six is the practical limit.

Can I put the table against a wall?

Yes, and it saves 60cm on that side, but you lose the seats along the wall. Many families do this day to day and pull the table out for guests.

How high should a dining table be?

75 to 80cm. All of ours fall in that band.

Every table in this guide is on display in our Portlaoise showroom, Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 5pm. Bring your room measurements and we will mark the footprint out on the floor. Browse the full dining table range.
