Box Pleat Curtains — Common Questions

Flat, rectangular pleats that sit side by side across the top of the curtain, with no gathering between them — crisp, tailored and architectural. They read as very modern in a plain fabric and very smart in a stripe or check.

Because each pleat folds a full width of fabric back on itself, the heading needs 2.5–3× fullness — the most of any style. That’s what keeps the pleats flat and square rather than pulling open. It’s worth budgeting for when you compare quotes.

They can hang from a pole, but they sit flattest on a track hidden behind the heading, where the pleats stay perfectly aligned. On a pole, expect a little more movement between the pleats.

Mid-to-heavyweight fabrics with some body — lined cottons, linen blends, wool and velvet. Very light fabrics won’t hold a sharp fold. Stripes and checks are a classic choice because the flat pleat shows the pattern cleanly.
