Buying a Sofa in Ireland: Big Chain or Local Showroom? What to Check Before You Order

That tells you the real question is not “which brand” but “what should I check before I order a sofa from anyone”. Eight things to check before you order a sofa
- Can you choose the fabric and the layout? Stock ranges come in set colours and set configurations. Made-to-order sofas let you pick the fabric, the colour and, for corner sofas, whether the chaise sits on the left or the right.
- What is the frame and what is in the cushions? Ask about the frame material, the seat springing and the cushion filling. A low price on the tag is often a low price in the frame.
- Is delivery to the room and assembly included? Kerbside delivery, delivery to the room, and delivery with assembly are three different services. Flat-packed sofas mean you assemble.
- How long is the lead time? Stock sofas can arrive in days; made-to-order sofas take weeks. Get the date in writing.
- What does the warranty cover and for how long? Read whether it covers the frame only, the mechanism, or the upholstery too.
- What do you pay and when? Full payment up front, a deposit with the balance on delivery, or finance. Each suits different budgets.
- What are the returns terms on a made-to-order piece? Custom items are usually non-returnable everywhere. Know that before you confirm a fabric.
- Can you sit on it first? Comfort is personal. A showroom visit is worth the drive for a sofa you will keep for ten years.

Where the big chains are strong
It would be dishonest to pretend a local showroom wins on everything. Large chains hold stock, so a standard sofa in a standard fabric can be in your house within days. Their entry prices are lower than a made-to-order sofa, and most of them advertise finance. If you need a sofa this week and any of the stock colours will do, a chain is a reasonable choice. Check their delivery-to-room, assembly and warranty terms on their own websites, because those terms differ by range and change over time. Where a made-to-order showroom is strong
If the sofa has to fit a specific wall, match a specific colour, or last through a family, made to order pays back the wait. You choose the configuration and fabric, you sit on the same frame in the showroom before you commit, and the sofa is assembled in your room by the people who sold it to you. Is a more expensive sofa actually better?
Not automatically. Price tracks the frame, the springing, the filling and the fabric grade. Two sofas at the same price can be built very differently, which is why the construction question above matters more than the brand name.
