Getting Bedroom Curtains Right

Blackout, done properly

A blackout lining behind the fabric you love beats a “blackout curtain” in a fabric you settled for. For full darkness, extend the pole 15–20cm past the frame each side so light can’t sneak around the edges — or add a made to measure blackout blind behind the curtains.

Warmth for Irish winters

Thermal and interlined curtains add a real layer of insulation over the glass — the difference is obvious in an older house. Heavier linings also make the curtains hang fuller and quieter.

Length, with radiators in mind

Floor-length looks best — but if a radiator sits under the window, go sill-length or pair dress curtains with a blind so you don’t heat the back of your curtains. Our measuring guide covers both.

Every pair is quoted individually — price depends on window size, fabric, heading and lining. Fabric prices are published openly per metre (most of the range is €35–€45 per metre, sale fabrics from €30); blackout and thermal linings are itemised on your quote so you can see exactly what each adds. Blackout lining, usually — it lets you pick any fabric you love for the room side and still get full darkness, and it protects the face fabric from sun fade. Ready made “blackout curtains” lock you into a small range of fabrics.

Yes — a thermal or interlined curtain adds a genuine layer of insulation over the glass, which matters in older Irish homes with single glazing or draughty frames. You feel it most on winter nights, and heavier curtains also soften noise and hang beautifully.

Floor-length — about 1cm above the floor — for the fullest look and best light blocking. If a radiator sits under the window, choose sill-length or pair curtains with a blind. Our measuring guide shows exactly how to measure both.
